Hyperaldosteronism, also known as Conn's disease (named after Dr. Jerome Conn who discovered it in 1956) is a rare disease marked by a tumor on the adrenal gland that can wreak havoc on your entire world.
In 2008, I was diagnosed with Conn’s, although my surgeon believes I had it for at least 8 years prior. Marked by low potassium, high aldosterone production and high blood pressure, Conn’s can rob you of your life. There are many other symptoms that result, yet there is conflicting information about this, which can leave a patient feeling hopeless and defeated.
But there is hope—I am living proof. I have listed in this blog all the tests and steps you will take that will lead you to a recovery plan, be it surgery or medication.
The more we share our experiences with this disease, the more attention it will get, which means better guidelines for testing and options for recovery. With up to 15% of newly diagnosed hypertension cases being caused by Conn's, this is a disease doctors and patients need to take very seriously.
